SUMMARY:Agronomic University Online
DESCRIPTION:Agronomic University Spring Semester: The Order and Beauty of the World  \n\n\n\nThursdays\, 5-6:15 pm Pacific via Zoom\, beginning February 1st \n\n\n\nSign up here \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis spring and summer’s agronomic university semester will be devoted to contemplation of what Simone Weil calls “the order and beauty of the world.” In what will serve as the theme-setting piece\, her essay “Forms of the Implicit Love of God\,” she points to an underlying affinity between science\, art\, religion\, and personal love. Each involves our relationship with particular “images” or models of God’s creation as a whole – as beautiful\, as coherent\, as obedient\, or as responsive to us\, respectively.  \n\n\n\nWhen we contemplate such images with attention\, Weil claims they function as “sacraments”– even the cosmological and mathematical models that will be our focus. Like sacraments [from Greek\, mysterion] proper\, these images are icons of the mystery of Truth itself–functioning this way for us because of\, rather than in spite of\, their limiting particularities.  \n\n\n\nWith this potential in mind\, we will turn our attention to an eclectic set of images/models: from cosmology (ancient Roman\, modern\, and Biblical)\, geometry (Pythagorean\, Byzantine iconography\, and as applied ethically/spiritually)\, and “pattern language” as it is described by the architect Christopher Alexander. Rather than a formal class\, our time together will take the form of shared exploration with occasional help from guest presenters and facilitators.  \n\n\n\nOur discussions take place on Thursdays\, 5-6:15 pm Pacific / 8-9:15 pm Eastern via Zoom.  \n\n\n\nDuring our first session on 2/1\, we will discuss Weil’s “Forms of the Implicit Love of God.”  \n\n\n\nDuring the rest of February\, we will be joined by Andrew Brown – a Ph.D. Candidate in physics at Princeton\, poet\, and an incredible teacher! – who will lead our unit on ancient and modern cosmology\, taking Roman poet Lucretius’ On the Nature of Things and Stephen Hawking’s A Brief History of Time as our primary texts. \n\n\n\nYou can find a full (tentative) calendar here. \n\n\n\nSign up to join us here!  \n\n\n\nFor background on the Simone Weil Catholic Worker’s “agronomic university” project\, including past courses on recapitulation and Scripture\, check out our website.

SUMMARY:Revolution of the Heart: The Spirituality of Dorothy Day
DESCRIPTION:The co-founder of the Catholic Worker movement\, a prolific journalist and determined\, social activist\, Dorothy Day (1897-1980) is coined by many as “New York’s saint”. \n\n\n\n\nHow does her radical spirituality – grounded in volunteer poverty\, non-violence\, eucharistic devotion\, and activism – speak to people of this day and age?\n\n\n\nHow might she be a wisdom figure in the contemporary world which is often deemed as secular\, materialistic\, and techno-centered?\n\n\n\n\nThis day-long conference at Mariandale provides opportunity to unpack these questions with people who knew Dorothy well: her granddaughter\, Martha Hennessy\, and Robert Ellsberg\, Editor-in-Chief of Orbis books\, who lived in the Catholic Worker in the mid-70’s and who edited Dorothy Day: Selected Writings; By Little and by Little (2005). \n\n\n\nActive Catholic worker members\, along with students and faculty of area Catholic Colleges\, will lead discussions as they seek to make sense of Dorothy Day from a contemporary lens. The day will provide ample opportunity for prayer\, reflection\, and enjoyment of the scenic land at Mariandale. \n\n\n\nCo-sponsors include: Fordham University\, Iona University\, Manhattan College\, Molloy University\, Mount Saint Mary College\, Sacred Heart University\, Seton Hall University\, and St. John’s University\, and the University of Mount Saint Vincent. \n\n\n\nDate/Time: Saturday\, April 13 from 9:30 am to 4 pm \n\n\n\nFee: $40 (includes lunch) \n\n\n\nThe Keynote Speakers’ presentations are as follows: \n\n\n\n\n“The Duty of Delight: Dorothy Day and the Spirituality of Daily Life\,” Robert Ellsberg\n\n\n\n“Dorothy Day and the Mystical Body of Christ\,” Martha Hennessy\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGuest Speakers: \n\n\n\nMartha Hennessy is a peace activist and member of the Catholic Worker Movement co-founded by her grandmother\, Dorothy Day. She is the seventh child of Tamar\, Dorothy Day’s only child. She has been arrested and imprisoned protesting nuclear power\, war\, the use of drones\, the torture of prisoners in Guantanamo and other prisons\, and the use of starvation as a weapon of war in Yemen. She has traveled to Russia\, Egypt\, Iraq\, Iran\, Afghanistan\, Jordan\, and Palestine to understand the effects of war on other peoples. Martha divides her time between the family farm in Vermont and volunteer work at Maryhouse Catholic Worker in New York City. She travels and speaks on the topics of life and work in community\, Catholic Social Teaching\, and peacemaking efforts in the tradition of the Catholic Worker movement. \n\n\n\nRobert Ellsberg\, Editor-in-Chief of Orbis books\, who lived in the Catholic Worker in the mid-70’s and who edited Dorothy Day: Selected Writings; By Little and by Little (2005). \n\n\n\nWhen\n\n\n\nSaturday\, April 13\, 2024 9:30AM – 4:00PM EDT \n\n\n\n\nAdd toGoogleOutlookiCal\n\n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\nThe Center at Mariandale\n\n\n\nPhone: (914) 941-4455299 N Highland Ave.Ossining\, New York10562United StatesWebsite

SUMMARY:Dorothy Day Guild Book Study
DESCRIPTION:Is your New Year’s resolution to read more good books in 2024? We had such a good time last fall with our Thérèse reading group that we’ve decided to offer another Dorothy book club for the spring semester! Historian and longtime friend of the Guild\, Anne Klejment\, has graciously agreed to host a Lenten book club where we will read Dorothy’s spiritual autobiography\, The Long Loneliness\, (available for purchase here) together over four sessions. \n\n\n\nOur spring reading group will meet Sunday evenings at 8pm Eastern/7pm Central\, beginning on March 3rd\, and continuing March 10th\, March 17th\, and finishing on Palm Sunday\, March 24th. Sign up using this form to receive the reading schedule and additional materials. Anne is the author of a number of academic studies on the Catholic Worker movement and on Dorothy’s influence on American Catholicism\, and we’re so excited for her to bring her expertise to this classic text!

SUMMARY:Sacred Peace Walk (Nevada Desert Experience)
DESCRIPTION:Catholic Workers Invited to Spend Holy Week in the Desert\n\n\n\n“We still hold that nonviolent resistance is the only sane solution…” Dorothy Day\n\n\n\nSACRED PEACE WALK\, MARCH 23-29\, 2024\n\n\n\nIn this season of wars\, a worldwide refugee crisis and the climate thrown into chaos\, when the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists moves up its doomsday clock to 90 seconds before midnight\, the Nevada Desert Experience invites you to join us in an event of hope and resistance in the desert. \n\n\n\nOver Holy Week\, March 23-29 this year\, as for most of the past 40 years\, NDE will host The Sacred Peace Walk\, an interfaith journey of approximately 60 miles from Las Vegas to the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS\, formerly the Nevada Test Site) through the Mojave in Nevada\, on the beautiful traditional lands of the indigenous Western Shoshone and Paiute peoples. \n\n\n\nSTOLEN LAND; THE MOST BOMBED PLACE ON EARTH\n\n\n\nThe NNSS\, established on land stolen from the Western Shoshone nation\, was the primary testing ground of American nuclear devices from 1951 to 1992; 928 announced nuclear explosions occurred there\, making it the most bombed place on earth.  Since then\, it has continued to be the site of “subcritical” nuclear tests and other research for new nuclear bombs and for the “life-extension” of old ones. \n\n\n\n“TICKLING THE DRAGON’S TAIL\,”MAKING SURE THAT NUKES ARE “GOOD TO GO”\n\n\n\nEven as we walk to the NNSS in March\, it is expected that parts for the new “Scorpius” linear induction accelerator will arrive there before we do.  This machine\, the length of a football field and 1\,000 feet below the ground when completed in four years\, would conduct experiments with high-energy bursts of X-rays and plutonium. Government scientists call these experiments “tickling the dragon’s tail” and insist that they are necessary to ensure that the aging stockpile of nuclear weapons will be “good to go” if the decision is made to use them and exterminate most life on the planet. \n\n\n\nRESIST DRONE MURDERS\n\n\n\nCreech Air Force Base\, about halfway from Las Vegas to the test site\, is the center of drone warfare and assassination for the US military and the CIA.  NDE began protesting there in 2009 and since then war from a distance by remote control has grown to be a staple of US policy\, and instrument of terror that exacts a horrific toll on civilians abroad and moral injury on troops at home. \n\n\n\nNUCLEAR STATIONS OF THE CROSS\n\n\n\nThe walk will end at the NNSS with a “Nuclear Stations of the Cross” procession from the historic Peace Camp to the gates. With permission of the Western Shoshone National Council\, some will enter the test site\, risking arrest. After more than 30 years of not prosecuting activists arrested at the NNSS\, local authorities have recently begun charging those who cross their line with trespassing. \n\n\n\nMarch is a beautiful time to camp in the desert along the way and there may be limited indoor accommodations. Walkers are asked to bring their own camping gear\, but some equipment is available to borrow. Support vehicles will follow along the route to provide water\, snacks\, first aid supplies and porta-potties.  All meals will be provided. You are free to walk the portion of each day’s route that is comfortable for you. Volunteers are needed each day to support the walk by providing/serving meals\, driving support vehicles\, donating snacks and supplies\, and other tasks. \n\n\n\nThe suggested registration fee for the SPW is $125 general and $75 for veterans\, seniors and students or $20 per day. \n\n\n\nFor more information\, to register or make a donation\, see http//nevadadesertexperience.org/spw or call Brian Terrell at 773-853-1886. \n\n\n\nPlease join us to resist nuclear weapons and endless war\, stand up for indigenous rights and create a peaceful\, sustainable future. Together we can transform fears into compassion and empathy into action during NDE’s annual Sacred Peace Walk!

SUMMARY:Personalism Roundtable
DESCRIPTION:Virtual: Online Event \n\n\n\nIn collaboration with our friends at the Canterbury House in Chicago\, we are hosting a Personalism roundtable discussion. Inspired from philosophers and writers such as Peter Maurin\, Emmanuel Mounier\, Nikolai Berdyaev\, and many others. \n\n\n\nSome of the questions we will be pondering: \n\n\n\n\nWhat is Personalism?\n\n\n\nIs there a specific personalist thinker you’re partial to?\n\n\n\nWhat (if any) are the limits to Personalism?\n\n\n\nWhat are some Personalist reforms we might strive to enact in our lives and/or society?\n\n\n\n\nThe structure of this roundtable is simple. We will have a panel of people from the Maurin Academy\, Canterbury House\, and a few colleagues of ours with lots of knowledge and familiarity on the topic discussing some of these questions above\, and then we will leave plenty of time to field questions and perspectives from attendees.

SUMMARY:National Biennial Catholic Worker Farmer Gathering
DESCRIPTION:This is an invitation for you to join us for the next National Biennial Catholic Worker farmer gathering the weekend of February 17th\, 2024 at the First English Lutheran Church (215 W. Pine) in Platteville\, Wisconsin\, which is about 80 miles southwest of Madison\, WI and 20 miles north of Dubuque\, Iowa. \n\n\n\nIf you have any questions or plan on coming\, please let me know. Or if you’re able to take leadership on a meal. \n\n\n\nHere are some details: \n\n\n\nSleeping will be floor space. We will have a few spots available for a little more comfortable stay at St. Isidore CWF\, about a 10 minute drive from the church. We can also inquire with local friends who probably would be willing to put some folks up. \n\n\n\nYou can arrive anytime from Friday afternoon on. We’ll begin with supper at 5:30pm. Introductions will be 9am Saturday and we’ll be modeling the rest of the day on our Sugar Creek gatherings\, with roundtable discussions\, meals\, and\, to end the night\, some fun. \n\n\n\nLet me know if you have roundtable suggestions. My take is that I would love to hear from communities: What’s been going well? What are challenges you’re facing? Bring pictures and images showing us what you’re engaged with land restoration\, soil health\, farm businesses\, animals\, etc. etc. I’m sure we’ll also get into decolonization\, climate crisis\, Gaza\, nuclear weapons\, but I’m thinking of this primarily as a time to convene about our lives engaging with the land. \n\n\n\nSunday will be more optional. Nearby Mass and church services in the morning. Farm tour at St. Isidore in the afternoon. And then a community dance in nearby Dickeyville led by St. Isidore’s own Mary Kay McDermott\, 3-5pm. Folks are welcome to stay over on Sunday night or head out at any time. \n\n\n\nThe church is charging hardly anything to be there\, so anything beyond the $200 we need for that will go to the Honor Native Land Fund. \n\n\n\nPlease Reply with the Following Info by Feb 1: \n\n\n\nAre you coming? How many will come\, and when will you arrive/leave? \n\n\n\nCan you be responsible for a meal (or join forces with others on a meal)? Which one(s)? \n\n\n\nDo you have special requests for roundtables? \n\n\n\nDo you have dietary restrictions? \n\n\n\nDo you need our help finding housing options beyond the carpeted floor at the church? \n\n\n\nLastly\, please remember to bring images to share of your farm that we can project! \n\n\n\nPeace\, \n\n\n\nEric Anglada \n\n\n\nSt. Isidore CW Farm \n\n\n\nCuba City\, WI \n\n\n\n608.568.3630 \n\n\n\ncatholicworkerschool@gmail.com
