SUMMARY:Sugar Creek Midwest CW Gathering
DESCRIPTION:2023 Sugar Creek Gathering\n\n\n\nFrom organizer Eric Anglada: \n\n\n\n\n\nIt’s getting close to Sugar Creek time\, folks! Take a look at details below – I’d love to be inundated with volunteers for cooking meals (Friday supper through Sunday breakfast for roughly 75 people)\, Sunday CW liturgy planning\, variety show mc!  \n\n\n\nSugar Creek Catholic Worker Gathering \n\n\n\nSeptember 12-15th\, 2024 \n\n\n\nSaints Mary and Joseph Catholic Church  \n\n\n\n3218 110th St. – Preston\, Iowa 52069 \n\n\n\nAlso be in touch if you’d like to reserve one of the few\, precious (and tiny) private rooms.  \n\n\n\nA few notes before Maria’s Sugar Creek orientation below: \n\n\n\n-The house at SugarCreek is wheel chair accessible.  \n\n\n\n-For those interested in Mass at the adjacent church\, it’s happening at 8am that Sunday. \n\n\n\n-We need $800 to cover costs. Anything we raise beyond that will go towards Honor Native Land Fund.  \n\n\n\nFor people who haven’t been before\, I copied and pasted the below from Maria Bergh: \n\n\n\n-You can get to SugarCreek as early as Thursday\, but most people show up on Friday and there are no group meals provided until Friday supper.  \n\n\n\n-The only food and drinks we have while we’re there is what we bring. Don’t depend on someone else to bring you food outside of planned meals — this is a great chance to empty your cupboards of all the stuff that hasn’t been eaten in the last six months. Likewise\, this is an event with alcohol\, if you want to drink\, consider making a contribution.  \n\n\n\n-It’s customary for large-ish CW contingents to support Saturday/Sunday meals. That means bringing the ingredients and prepping\, cooking\, serving the meal. It is customary to accommodate vegetarian\, vegan\, and GF options. There may be extra ingredients around to use from farms or other donations\, but no promises. BYO spices\, oils\, some even BYO sharp knives\, but most basic equipment is provided. Other CWs usually pitch in to support the dishwashing to lighten the load.  \n\n\n\n-Agenda: Friday night is informal fun / campfire\, Saturday morning is introductions\, agenda setting\, and then 3 round table sessions\, usually with 3-4 options of round tables during each session. One of the round table sessions occurs concurrent with a soccer game. After dinner is a skit / talent show. Be prepared. Sunday morning breakfast\, worship\, clean up & departures. \n\n\n\n-Accommodations: there are limited indoor restrooms including tiny showers\, a CW-esque kitchen\, several bunk rooms (bring your own linens\, pillows)\, a field for tents\, and port a potties. There are a couple private rooms\, priority for families with kids. \n\n\n\n-Rules: don’t sleep in the cemetery\, no pets. \n\n\n\n-Pack it out: all the extra food / compost / trash / recycling needs to go somewhere. Usually nearby farms take the compost\, but if you have room in your car for a bag of trash or recycling\, please help the cause. Usually you can also easily score a sandwich and / or snack (or more valuable things like a jar of honey or pickles) for the ride home as you help clean up the kitchen. \n\n\n\n\nPeace\, \n\n\n\n\nEric Anglada – St. Isidore Catholic Worker Farm  \n\n\n\n608.568.3630 (landline)  \n\n\n\ncatholicwo…@gmail.com

SUMMARY:The Spiritual Crises of Modernity: From Nominalism to Nihilism
DESCRIPTION:The Spiritual Crises of Modernity: From Nominalism to Nihilism \n\n\n\nA Maurin Academy course with Deacon Christopher May \n\n\n\n7 pm CDT on Tuesdays October 08\, 15\, 22\, 29 \n\n\n\nReportedly\, William Temple\, who became the Archbishop of Canterbury in 1942\, once asked his father\, who was then the Archbishop: “Father\, why don’t philosophers rule the world?” His father looked down at him and replied\, “But they do rule the world — 200 years after they are dead.” \n\n\n\nIn this course\, we will examine how certain rarified discussions among philosophers that took place in Europe about the year 1300 dramatically changed our concepts of God\, of the human person\, of the natural world\, and of knowledge\, and so set the stage for the subsequent development of the Modern experiment. \n\n\n\nWe’ll not speculate too much about “what to do” and “where do we go from here.” Rather we’ll try to recapture an appreciation of what we as a civilization lost when we took the deadly detour to Modernity. We’ll try to identify some of the unchallenged and unacknowledged assumptions that have brought us a world that seems so inimical to human flourishing. We can’t learn how to “make a world where it is easier to be good” until we know just what it is that we’ve already done to make a world where it seems so difficult to be good. \n\n\n\nWe’ll start by looking at late Medieval debates about what “is” is (without apology to Bill Clinton)\, then look at how this led to a redefinition of the nature of God and of the human person. Then on to the split between faith and reason\, to our change in our ideas about nature and the world\, to the increasing emphasis on the individual and on sovereignty\, to the rise of science\, and how the dominance of science led to the marginalization and privatization of morality. Finally we’ll examine how late modernity\, with its neoliberal capitalism\, is the cause of much spiritual distress and mental illness. \n\n\n\nClass Schedule: \n\n\n\nOctober 8: The Crisis of Being – Security is Lost \n\n\n\nOctober 15: The Crisis of Meaning – Reality is Lost \n\n\n\nOctober 22: The Crisis of Knowledge – Security is Sought \n\n\n\nOctober 29: The Crisis of the Self – Community is Lost \n\n\n\nChristopher May is a Catholic deacon in Pennsylvania\, serving the poor\, especially those who experience mental health challenges.

SUMMARY:The Gap in God’s Country: A Longer View on Our Culture Wars
DESCRIPTION:The Gap in God’s Country: A Longer View on Our Culture Wars\, Sessions Starting in November (Nov. 18\, Dec. 2 & 9\, Jan. 6 & 20). To attend\, join the Maurin Academy Patreon at the $5 or $ levels\, or register on Eventbrite for $20 for all five sessions\, or a donation of your choice. Catholic Workers are invited to attend without cost: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/87876608911?pwd=sdaboEPbKTs7c8DvOfftFxa6iKx47g.1 \n\n\n\nIn the upcoming Gap in God’s Country live online sessions\, I want to let people know why my book is different from many others that claim to explain our difficult and often ugly moment in time. For one thing\, I offer practical solutions—and that is something everyone always asks for in vain. I hope these sessions will shake you up\, because we are all a bit set in our ways\, whether we know it or not. Each 1.5 hour session will focus on one or two divergent themes in this book\, and each will have a Q & A discussion at the end. We will record them all\, and registrants will not only be able to attend live\, but will receive all five recordings.  \n\n\n\nSession 1: Your own personal story is important to your politics—here’s mine. I’ll discuss how my background affected my political positions. Political positions aren’t nearly as solid and principled as people think. It’s crucial to step outside intellectual and spiritual echo chambers if we want to solve problems\, so we need to really know why people believe so strongly in their ideologies\, and why they shift.  \n\n\n\nSession 2: Right-wing movements around the world\, including MAGA\, are partly reactions to economic globalization\, just as left-wing movements have been\, so let’s discuss how these trends have conditioned us. Capitalist market imperatives\, and consequent automation and economic globalization\, are essential threats to our wellbeing\, but they are like the air we breathe—taken for granted and largely thought of as natural and unalterable.  \n\n\n\nSession 3:  If we don’t understand how changes in our food supply have greatly altered our political landscape\, we cannot possibly solve our political impasses. Yes\, that’s right\, food is more important than you even knew. I come at this topic through popular culture and real-world examples. Changing our food system has meant deep dislocations and mass migrations that are ongoing and sometimes create extremism. Be prepared for long-standing assumptions to be challenged. \n\n\n\nSession 4: Megachurches and those they inspire can be like cults—and if that sounds too harsh\, let me explain. In this session I’ll discuss what psychological theories of narcissistic abuse and cult behavior help us understand our current foray into a hyper-balkanized political environment\, and  hyper-politicized religion. The same dynamics you’ve experienced in your personal relationships can run entire churches—and countries\, which just as much psychic power. Here’s why we should care about those caught in politicized religion.  \n\n\n\nSession 5: Yes\, I’m offering practical suggestions for change at the individual\, church or other group\, and policy/political levels\, not vague and aspirational concluding remarks. Before that I’ll look at what people have tried in the past and what they’re trying now\, so I’ll discuss the history and state of the Catholic Worker movement\, the Distributists\, and others who are trying to provide an alternative model navigating between polarizing choices like “Capitalism” and “Communism.”  But in the end\, I do have some very specific suggestions.

SUMMARY:
DESCRIPTION:Craft Retreat Set for February 13-18. Strangers and Guests Catholic Worker (Maloy\, Iowa) will host a winter Craft Retreat from February 13-18\, 2024\, inviting participants to engage in weaving\, basketry\, spinning\, baking\, candle making\, singing\, and storytelling. The retreat’s schedule will be shaped around attendees’ interests\, offering opportunities to try their hand at weaving projects\, including rag rug making on one of two looms. While the retreat is free\, donations are welcome to help cover expenses. For details\, contact Betsy at Strangers and Guests Catholic Worker. \n\n\n\nHere are the details from Strangers and Guests CW:Maloy Craft Retreat 2025: February 13-18 \n\n\n\nWe are planning for a time of skill sharing\, creative exploration and fellowship at Strangers and Guests Catholic Worker next February from Thursday the 13th to the following Tuesday\, Feb 18. We will plan the details of the schedule based on the folks who are able to come. We will set up two looms\, so those who wish to have a chance to learn the rag rug process from start to finish. A second loom will be set up for another type of weaving-yet to be determined. \n\n\n\nWe have enjoyed very much hosting craft retreats-filling the house in the bleak winter weather with weaving\, basketry\, spinning\, baking\, singing\, praying\, sharing stories and eating.  People pitch in to manage the cooking\, clean-up and raw materials for meals and activities.  We can provide beds for some\, “indoor camping” for others. There is no charge to participate\, but donations to help with expenses are welcome.  Space is limited. \n\n\n\nLet Betsy know if you are thinking you might participate in February. We are open to hosting people interested in crafts at other times. Some crafts go on year round here at Strangers and Guests\, others are more seasonal and specific. Visitors who are ready  and able to work at whatever is needed are always welcome- the there are to handle the daily tasks\, the more time there is for crafts\, music and thoughtful reading. \n\n\n\nBetsy Keenan   keenan…@yahoo.com    Phone 641 785 2321

SUMMARY:Holy Innocents Action at Offutt Air Force Base
DESCRIPTION:An invitation to Catholic Workers and Friends \n\n\n\n“A voice was heard in Ramah\, sobbing and loud lamentation; Rachel weeping for her children\, and she would not be consoled\, since they were no more.”    Jeremiah 31:15 \n\n\n\nOn “Holy Innocents Day\,” December 28\, when many Christians remember the children of Bethlehem slaughtered by King Herod who perceived the birth of Jesus as a security threat\, there will be a nonviolent and prayerful witness at Offutt Air Force Base at Belleville\, near Omaha\, Nebraska. \n\n\n\nOffutt is home to the U.S. Strategic Command’s Command and Control Facility\, the bunker from which the destruction of the planet might be orchestrated. The Command and Control Facility is responsible to “aid the president’s nuclear response decision-making process\, and\, if called upon\, deliver a decisive response in all domains.” \n\n\n\nFrom the time of Herod to our own time of Trump\, Biden\, Putin\, Zalenski and Netanyahu\, the innocents are slaughtered in the interest of national security. Modern instruments of war and the threat of “a decisive response in all domains” puts every child under Herod’s sword. \n\n\n\nWe will gather at St John’s Church Hall on the Creighton University campus\, 2500 California Plaza in Omaha\, at 6 PM\, Friday\, December 27. We will share a meal and there will be sleeping space on the floor. At 8AM on Saturday\, we will celebrate Mass of the day in the hall and expect to arrive at Offutt’s Bellevue Gate\, 2502 Nelson Dr\, Bellevue\, around 10AM. \n\n\n\nAs we celebrate the nativity of the Christ Child in this most perilous of years\, we pause to mourn the slaughter of children that accompanied His birth. We will stand at the gates of the greatest threat to life on the planet in solidarity with all refugees and victims of war and to beseech all those at Offutt Air Force Base whose job it is to “aid the president’s nuclear response decision-making process” to act in defense of all creation. \n\n\n\nFor more information call Brian Terrell at 773-853-1886 or Jim Murphy at 608-617-7379

SUMMARY:Midwest CW Faith and Resistance Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Catholic Workers Return to Protest Nuclear Bomb Production in Kansas City \n\n\n\nSAVE THE DATE!   April 24-27\, 2026 \n\n\n\n“It is all very well to say we must go to the source of all strength\, to drink at the living fountain of Christ\, but can we go from that fount of Love to a factory where nerve gas and incendiary bombs are manufactured?” \n\n\n\nDorothy Day\, April 1954 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAt the Midwest Catholic Worker retreat in September\, in consultation with PeaceWorksKC\, the Cherith Brook CW and Jerusalem Farm communities\, it was agreed that we would return to the Kansas City National Security Campus\, (KCNSC) for our annual Spring Resistance gathering. The KCNSC is where 80% of the electronic and mechanical parts for U.S. nuclear weapons are produced\, including the triggering and guidance systems as part of the $2 trillion “Stockpile Stewardship and Management Plan.” \n\n\n\nAbout the time when the CW visited the “campus” in the Spring of 2024\, the U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) had announced that the old B61 bombs deployed at various U.S. bases and several NATO bases in Europe since 1968\, have been replaced with the new improved “more flexible\, more precise and easily deployable” B61-12 bombs. Since then\, the next generation tactical nuclear weapon\, the B-61-13\, up to 24 times as powerful as the bomb dropped on Hiroshima\, has gone into production ahead of schedule. “The B61-13\,” according to the NNSA\, “will provide the President with additional nuclear options against certain harder and large-area military targets.” The new construction at the already sprawling bomb factory to double its size that was disrupted in 2024\, is nearer to completion. \n\n\n\nThe danger of nuclear war has never been so imminent and in this time of global instability\, the Kansas City National “Security” Campus is providing President Trump with “additional nuclear options” that would end life on this planet as we know it. \n\n\n\nJoin us for a weekend of prayer\, education\, discernment\, celebration and mourning in preparation for acts of nonviolent direct action for the sake of life on Monday morning\, April 27. \n\n\n\nFor information to follow \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nContacts: \n\n\n\nHenry Stoever\, PeaceWorksKC\, henrystoever@sbcglobal.net \n\n\n\nMike Miles and Barb Kass\, Anathoth CW Farm\, Luck\, WI\, anathoth@lakeland.ws \n\n\n\nJane Stoever\, PeaceWorksKC\, janepstoever@yahoo.com \n\n\n\nBrian Terrell\, Strangers and Guests CW Farm\, Maloy\, IA\,  brian1956terrell@gmail.com \n\n\n\nAnn Suellentrop\, PeaceWorksKC\, annsuellen@gmail.com \n\n\n\nNasid\, “N.
