Holy Innocents Action at Offutt Air Force Base
December 27, 2024 – December 28, 2024
An invitation to Catholic Workers and Friends
“A voice was heard in Ramah, sobbing and loud lamentation; Rachel weeping for her children, and she would not be consoled, since they were no more.” Jeremiah 31:15
On “Holy Innocents Day,” December 28, when many Christians remember the children of Bethlehem slaughtered by King Herod who perceived the birth of Jesus as a security threat, there will be a nonviolent and prayerful witness at Offutt Air Force Base at Belleville, near Omaha, Nebraska.
Offutt is home to the U.S. Strategic Command’s Command and Control Facility, the bunker from which the destruction of the planet might be orchestrated. The Command and Control Facility is responsible to “aid the president’s nuclear response decision-making process, and, if called upon, deliver a decisive response in all domains.”
From the time of Herod to our own time of Trump, Biden, Putin, Zalenski and Netanyahu, the innocents are slaughtered in the interest of national security. Modern instruments of war and the threat of “a decisive response in all domains” puts every child under Herod’s sword.
We will gather at St John’s Church Hall on the Creighton University campus, 2500 California Plaza in Omaha, at 6 PM, Friday, December 27. We will share a meal and there will be sleeping space on the floor. At 8AM on Saturday, we will celebrate Mass of the day in the hall and expect to arrive at Offutt’s Bellevue Gate, 2502 Nelson Dr, Bellevue, around 10AM.
As we celebrate the nativity of the Christ Child in this most perilous of years, we pause to mourn the slaughter of children that accompanied His birth. We will stand at the gates of the greatest threat to life on the planet in solidarity with all refugees and victims of war and to beseech all those at Offutt Air Force Base whose job it is to “aid the president’s nuclear response decision-making process” to act in defense of all creation.
