Winona Catholic Worker Wrestles with Forgiveness Amid ICE Enforcement

The Summer 2026 issue of the Winona (Minnesota) Catholic Worker newsletter centers on forgiveness, prompted by intensified ICE activity in Minnesota this past winter. In “Forgive Us Our Trespasses As We Forgive Those Who Trespass Against Us,” Melissa Gordon reflects on a conversation with a friend about whether the topic felt right for the moment, landing on “countless forgiveness x countless forgiveness” as a guiding practice:

“Like radical hospitality, radical forgiveness requires an emptying of ourselves, but in that emptying, we are filled with the compassion, peace, and light of Christ, and this is the most powerful form of resistance there is.”

A companion piece, “A Light in Darkness” by Nathan Rislove, draws on Matthew, Luke, and Isaiah to argue that forgiveness and justice work together rather than in place of one another.
