About 50 people, including Catholic Workers, participated in the Nevada Desert Experience walk from Las Vegas to the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS), where the U.S. government is conducting subcritical testing as part of the effort to maintain and update the United States’ nuclear arsenal.
The walkers also blocked the road at Creech Air Force Base, home to the pilots who operate drones on behalf of the U.S. military and CIA. The action resulted in the arrest of Beth Blattenberger and Jeanne Firth. (A third protester was arrested for “defacing federal property” by chalking a message on a rock.)
The walk was guided by Shoshone-Paiute tribal member Jeremiah Jones, who gave the activists permission to demonstrate on tribal land. He addressed security personnel at the Nevada National Security Site as part of the protest.
