Find the hope already here
Appalachian Catholic Worker is a listening presence in the mountains. We accompany the people, teach students about the region, and offer spiritual space. Inspired by the gospels, Catholic social teachings, and the 3 Appalachian pastoral letters, we find the hope that's already here in the context of these ancient, battered hills.
At our E.C.O. Center, we host visiting college groups on break, for Education, Contemplation, and Outreach for all Creation. By teaching about social and environmental justice, and practicing the works of mercy with them, we address both the root causes and effects of poverty in the holler.
On Turtle Hill Farm, we raise chickens for rainbow baskets of eggs, 4 goats keep down the brush, 2 Great Pyrenees ward off the predators, 4 cats keep the mice at bay, and we are emotional support humans for 2 rescued mutts.
Although we don't have accommodations for volunteers, we welcome visitors and offer spiritual accompaniment. With winding country roads to walk, and 100 acres of wooded hillsides to hike, it's easy to find a spot in the woods, on the ridge, by the pond or stream, or in a field, to connect with the Creator.
Cottage Industries include Catholic Worker bookmarks, Appalachian Stations of the Cross booklets, and whatever crafts we’ve made during long, dark, meditative winter evenings. We are not tax-exempt.
