Iowa City CW Raises Funds for Injured Migrant Farmworker

The Iowa City Catholic Worker recently appealed for financial help for a migrant farmworker badly injured in a grain elevator accident. The Iowa City Catholic Worker is an immigrant and refugee-led community dedicated to daily prayer and the Works of Mercy. The text of their appeal appears below:

Dear friends and workers,

Two weeks ago today, a family of Mexican-Americans called the Catholic Worker House with terrible news. A 26-year old migrant farmworker named Miguel was cleaning a conveyor belt in a grain elevator when the machine was turned on, mangling his lower limbs. Trapped in the machine for 30 minutes, he was eventually flown to UI Hospitals and Clinics where his legs were amputated to save his life.

The family of devout Catholics called us asking for prayers, but in the last two weeks our community has rallied behind them to provide accompaniment, support, hot meals, a place to shower and change, laundry, access to pastoral care, and a lot more.

Miguel’s road to recovery will be a long one, and his fight has only just begun. While his lawyers do everything in their power to ensure Miguel has the resources he needs to provide for his wife and two small children, his family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise urgently needed expenses while they wait for his workers compensation and other potential liability claims to be processed.

Can you help Miguel’s family have what they need to get through this harrowing ordeal by making a financial donation? Any donated amount no matter how big or how small will help a lot.

Please also pray for his recovery and the safety of all farmworkers,

Emily, David, and the Catholic Worker House team
