Five Catholic Workers were arrested on Monday, March 4th, while blocking access to the General Dynamics Electric Boat facility in New London, Connecticut. The engineering facility is involved in designing a new class of submarines equipped with nuclear weapons. Archbishop John Wester of Santa Fe, New Mexico, addressed the immorality of nuclear weapons and the moral imperative to abolish them in his sermon at the Mass for the Abolition of Nuclear Weapons, sponsored by the Dorothy Day Guild, at Our Savior Church in New York City. The event was held on November 29, 2023—the anniversary of Day’s death—and Wester cited Day’s early witness against nuclear weapons. Wester called on faith leaders, and Catholics in particular, to step up efforts to abolish nuclear weapons.

Daniel Ellsberg released this letter announcing that he has terminal pancreatic cancer on March 2.
Ellsberg is best known for leaking the Pentagon Papers to the New York Times in June 1972; however, in his letter he calls his work for nuclear disarmament his greatest cause. Ellsberg is also the father of Robert Ellsberg, editor at Orbis Books and managing editor of The Catholic Worker newspaper from 1976-1978.
