About Casa de Clara
In keeping with Dorothy Day’s vision that Catholic Workers live a simple lifestyle in community, serve the poor, and resist war and social injustice. They are grounded in the Gospel, prayer, and the Catholic faith,” Casa de Clara, the San Jose CA Catholic Worker House is soon set to reopen.
The house is a two-story Victorian structure. Covid and deferred maintenance have kept us closed for the last 18 months and we have used this time to repair and refurbish the house. For the past forty years, the many volunteers at San Jose Catholic Worker have focused on providing services to the homeless, especially single women and single women with children. We have provided meals, clothing, comfort and a safe place to be for all who enter our door. We also offer a mobile shower ministry, providing showers and foot care services at homeless encampments in the San Jose area.
We have attempted to create clean, safe, and sanctioned encampments for those experiencing homelessness in the near future.
We oppose all war and war-making, and have spent many days protesting at Lockheed-Martin, the largest weapons manufacturer in the world. We also actively oppose ROTC at our local Catholic university campus (Santa Clara University). If you are a roaming Catholic Worker of the world, a former Catholic Worker, or if you are a current Catholic Worker looking for a new experience, we may be just what you are looking for.
