The Casa de Clara Catholic Worker (San Jose, CA) :  We are a Catholic Worker community rooted in Jesus’ vision of God’s Reign among us, committed to a shared life of prayer and action in joyful service to people on the margins

The Casa de Clara house as a community: We offer supported, residential community in our 4-bedroom house for our resident workers  with 2 bedrooms for women and children who were living on the street.  As a community, we will be working together to help the needy and to bring justice to the poor.

Celebrate: For many of those in the Casa de Clara community, our faith in Jesus compels us to live out God’s calls for justice and peace. While our community includes people identifying with a variety of faiths, the Catholic Worker history of people rooted in Christian faith largely defines our community. As such, we gather regularly for prayer together, believing the importance of our unity in spirit.

Minister to those in need: We strive to help our neighbors by assisting with food distribution, clothing distribution, a shower ministry that brings a mobile shower unit to homeless encampments and other activities as our residents find our community is in need.

History:  Casa de Clara was founded in the 1970s and has provided services and a stable place for the Christian message, as promulgated by Dorothy Day and Peter Maurin, to be put into practice.   We have provided housing, food, clothing and shelter for the less fortunate in Silicon Valley, truly in the heart of wealth.   We have a shower program that we bring to homeless encampments along with other services that we are anxious to get restarted.  We have been engaged in pushing for social change in immigration, wealth disparity, homelessness and military madness.  We are located at 318 N. 6th Street, San Jose, CA.

“What we do is very little, but it’s like the little boy with a few loaves and fishes. Christ took that little and increased it. He will do the rest.” Dorothy Day

Characteristics that would point to a potential fit:

  • Desire to live in community supporting folks previously living on the streets
  • Interest in continuing Catholic formation (liturgy, Scripture, catechism, i.e., shared framework and practices.
  • Interest in working to correct injustices in our society.
  • Openness to a daily rhythm of prayer.

Other things to note:

  • We have a focus on assisting women and children in need.
  • We’re open to folks with or seeking part time work as well as those with full time availability
  • San Jose has great weather!
