Dorothy Day was born on November 8, 1897, in Brooklyn, New York. Her father, John Day, was a newspaper reporter from Tennessee; her mother, Grace Satterlee, was from New York and had English roots. Dorothy had two brothers, one of whom was Donald S. Day, and a sister. She had three brothers (John, Sam, and Donald) and one sister, Della.
