St. Martin de Porres Catholic Worker

Description

St. Martin de Porres Catholic Worker has its roots in the house started in 1938 by Mary Frecon on North Seventh Street among the displaced Old Eighth Ward community. In its current version, the house has been serving the people of Allison Hill since 1996. Long stewarded by peace activist Naed Smith, the house continues to provide hospitality to neighbors, the immigrant community of Allison Hill and greater Harrisburg, hosts daily prayer circles, monthly roundtable discussions and provides a home for community organizers, immigrants and activists alike. The house has farmed a quarter acre behind the Worker for decades, which is now known as Mama Mary Community Farm.
