Dorothy Day Catholic Worker House

Dorothy Day Catholic Worker House

The Dorothy Day Catholic Worker House of Corpus Christi (DDCWH) was established by Sarah Ann Fitz in January of 1993, formed primarily to offer interim residential hospitality to homeless alcoholics and drug addicts in recovery. Located at 210 South Carrizo Street in Corpus Christi, Texas, the house provides a safe and sober residence for a limited number of recovering alcoholics. Open twelve step recovery meetings are held at the house three times a week and residents are encouraged to attend outside meetings as well. Residents share housekeeping responsibilities and a strict policy of no drugs or alcohol use on or off the premises is enforced.

Residents of DDCWH, along with community volunteers, serve breakfast to the homeless and poor at the DDCWH the third Sunday of each month. Food, clothing, bedding, household goods, laundry, showers and the use of our telephone are also made available to those in need who come to the house seeking aid.

The DDCWH operates under the principles outlined in the Prayer of St.Francis which exemplify our charitable mission. All activities conducted by the DDCWH further our purpose of providing support to homeless alcoholics in recovery and those on the streets in need.   Art Days are offered weather permitting in the afternoons after breakfasts are served where the homeless and community volunteers interact with each other in creating works of art.  The DDCWH serves occasional neighborhood BBQs on Sunday afternoons inviting area homeless and those residing in the immediate vicinity.  The house has received funding allowing us to distribute food boxes to our immediate neighbors most in need and continues this service as funds are available.

Since DDCWH is a residential hospitality house, it operates seven days a week for residents. Other services are offered during daytime hours, or as needed. The service work at DDCWH is conducted by the director  and all those who are residing at the house, as well as the members of the board and outside volunteers.
